THE NEW NEWWe were in City Beat!
We are proud to have contributed to an article covering the Black experience in the Cincinnati vegan landscape, along with several other notable contributors, in one of the most influential independent publications in the city. Here’s the story: Cincinnati's Vegan Revolution |
Vegan & Black's lead storyteller, Naimah, has been invited back for her second talk at Cincy Veg Fest!
This time the conversation will be more than just an onstage presentation. In fact, the intention is to have more of a presence at the festival; Vegan & Black will have a curated booth, titled " Well Seasoned", that will be a collaborative experience between ourselves, Matunda Juicery, and local artist, Ron B., of Spkng In Tongues. It will be a comforting, sanctuary-like home base for Black attendees of Cincy's Veg Fest to check into as they explore the different food vendors that will be set up there. Naimah's conversational piece will be covering her research on food desserts and how certain Black food businesses and activists are tackling the issues. Here's her first talk here!

This Earth Day we’re talking about Hair.
I bought synthetic hair for box braids and whether or not it was a sustainable purchase, or even healthy for my hair, became one of my concerns. The style is super cute, convenient, and great for a person on the go. Not to mention the affordability and accessibility aspects; you can get braiding hair as easy as a click on Amazon or at the hair stores that line the streets of most Black communities. EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE HEALTHY: BLACK-OWNED JUICERY’S CONTRIBUTION TO NOURISHING FOOD DESERTS3/25/2023 With the overall well-being of the Black community at the forefront of the brand’s mission, Matunda produces all natural juice blends named for pivotal moments and songs relative to Black culture. It’s iconic really. The image of juicing and health focused brands is continually white-washed. Not every plant based person is interested in looking or behaving in a way that isn’t characteristic to their culture of origin.
It’s mainstream representation of juicing versus the dopeness of stopping by Matunda’s present selling location, Pause CINCY, to pick up a beverage named “Diced Pineapple” (inspired by a Rick Ross rap song featuring other rappers, Drake and Wale). A brand with this level of flavor would certainly attract a more diverse audience to health consciousness, which is the goal. Sometimes seeing a Black person in an ad or on a label isn't enough, cultural relevance should also be a main component of proper representation in a brand. |
